Among the 22 million inhabitants of Mexico City, one of them calls himself
Balboa. Alvaro Ruiz is the man behind this project and others as diverse as
his Mexotica electro outfit Ruisort, the musique concrete influenced
material released under his name and the quirky, experimental electronic pop
of ³Plastic Judas On Fire², his first and only album under the Balboa
alias. Balboa fuses the influence of famed Mexican composers Silvestre
Revueltas and Juan Garcia Esquivel, with Alvaro¹s own skillfull expertise at
electronic funk and digital sound processing. The end result is offbeat
music that is intelligent, precise and challenging, while being as warm,
engaging and rewarding as classic pop, with a healthy dose of irony thrown
in for good measure. Alvaro has also released material for the Igloo and
Static Discos labels, and is currently working on his self explanatorily
titled ³Algoryhthm and Blues² album where DSP meets traditional blues and
jazz instrumentation.
