Nomada - Mil (Grooves Magazine, may 2005)
Latinsizer is the new alias of Pepe Mogt, better known for his Nortec Productions as Fussible, and as the
label don behind Tijuana's Mil Records. While this cut from Mogt's solo album Ritmo 55 is not necessarily
the best choice for a lead single, the EP is coherent and extremely colorfoul, bringing to bear some of the
best in new Mexican talent.
The Extended version of
"Nomada" preserves the cheery melodies of the original, but expounds upon the
relaxed pace with the subtle flourish of delayed percussive elements and ascending arpeggios, drawning
an oblique connection between Kingston and Milan. The B-sides hit much harder, using an effectevely minimal
approach to composition:
"Disel" consists of little more than a kick, a snare and a shark-toothed bassline,
squelchy but ultimately stationary. Tre/molo's remix of
"Rubiconga" is a sexier affair than the original,
removing all unnecessary elements and leaving a bare scaffold of Latin-spiced funk. A Bonus white label includes
an even more discofied version of
"Nomada" glittery and hedonistic, while a respectably balsy Panoptica rework of
'SEM" balances the brightness with growling bass and stomping kicks.
A promising record from an ambitious new label.
